Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started & Class Expectations

Do I need prior experience?

No! All classes are open to beginners. We teach fundamentals and scale techniques for all levels.

Do I need to be in shape before I start?

No, absolutely not. One of the most common misconceptions is needing to “get in shape” before you start training. The reality is that training is what will get you in shape. It naturally improves your cardio, core, and functional strength while you learn a practical skill.

What should I wear to my first class?

For your trial or initial classes, comfortable workout attire like a T-shirt and sweatpants or athletic shorts is perfectly fine. Avoid clothing with zippers, pockets, or buttons that could scratch your partners. Once you fully commit to the program, you will need to invest in an official uniform (a Gi).

How much does a trial class cost?

Your first week of training is completely free! No commitment required.

Safety & Injuries

Is Jiu-Jitsu dangerous or violent?

While training a combat sport has inherent risks, the training environment is centered around control and mutual respect, not violence.

Will I get injured?

Because of the heavy emphasis on safety, controlled drilling, and tapping out early, injuries are rare. In fact, consistent training builds overall strength, core stability, and flexibility, which generally helps decrease your risk of everyday physical injuries.

Training & Progression

How often should I attend class to see progress?

Consistency is the absolute key. To establish a solid foundation and continuously retain what you are learning, it is highly recommended to attend classes 2 to 3 times per week.

How long does it take to get promoted?

Every individual's journey is completely unique. Promotions are based on “time on the mat,” technical proficiency, and individual growth.

Do I have to compete in tournaments?

No. If you want to test your skills in tournaments, the coaches will fully support you. If you are training solely for fitness, self-defense, or a hobby, that is perfectly acceptable and you will never be pressured to compete.

Academy Etiquette & Hygiene

How often should I wash my Gi?

Rule of thumb: wash your Gi immediately after every single class. To preserve the fabric and prevent shrinking, wash it in cold water (no higher than 40°C/104°F) and hang dry it instead of using a tumble dryer. Never step onto the mat with a dirty or smelly Gi.

Do I need to wear footwear?

Yes, you must wear flip-flops, sandals, or shoes anytime you step off the mat (such as walking to the restroom or changing rooms). This keeps the mats clean, hygienic, and free of outside bacteria. Never walk barefoot off the mats.

What are the personal cleanliness rules?

Because grappling is a close-contact sport, personal hygiene is paramount. Students must keep their fingernails and toenails short and cleanly trimmed to avoid scratching training partners. Always ensure you are clean and free of any skin ailments before stepping onto the mat.

Programs & Lessons

Are there classes for kids?

Yes! We have specialized youth programs for kids ages 5+. Classes are fun, safe, and focus on building confidence and technique.

Can I do private lessons?

Yes! We offer private lessons for individuals or small groups. Contact us to arrange a time.
